99%Truth—Wei-Yuan MAXZhe-Zhi LIN Joint Exhibition

99%的真實—馬維元X林哲志聯展
Curatorial Statement
“99% Truth” is an exhibition featuring artists MA Wei-Yuan and LIN Zhe-Zhi, the exhibition leads viewers on an exploration of “relationships” through the discourse between the works by the two artists. LIN Zhe-Zhi’s work blends a fictional narrative with the public’s collective memory of the early space arms race, the story revealed how a country can accumulate power and capital through technological claims and in turn develop diplomatic relations. MA Wei-Yuan’s work combines installations and routine performances. MA solicits couples to come to experience the work, where they will fall asleep after they exchange secrets with the artist, after confirming they have entered into the state of deep sleep the participant will receive a secret from him/her, a secret that is only revealed at the time of deep sleep that cannot be read…

Relying on that little white lie, or the gray area that both parties knew about and didn’t clarify, allowed each of these relationships to continue. From the smallest unit of two individuals to the convoluted relationship of competition and cooperation between two countries, we find that relationships of different scales share similar structures.

Works
Wei-Yuan MA《Learning to Sleep 2021》
Installation, Dimension Variable, 2021

Lie down on the bed, the one who is last in place is responsible for turning off the light Then it is completely dark.

The meteor burns as it travels through the atmosphere,
Pieces of embers fell on the quilt, on the land at night.

My planet seems peaceful,
It is in its atmosphere,
A meteor burning violently.

Sometimes with each other.

Sleep is a lonely trail, crossing the trail also means crossing the ridge that separates another day of life. It is a disconnected field, a contrast to the waking society, and a model of the end. The baby is afraid of it and cries out in search of company, and later one becomes afraid that there is no familiar environment when old and alone or when there is no lover by their side at death. On pleasant nights it is a familiar ancient road, and on restless nights it becomes a hidden path. Finally, when entering the dreams, senses that were hidden in the day awakens, like the unseen dark side of the moon.

LIN Zhe-Zhi《Possible Impossibility》
Dual-Channels、Documents, 2020

This work is based on a fictionalized joint space exploration program by Taiwan and the United States, which originates back in the early space race era. The United States used the concept and technology of the first moon landing to construct its national symbol and its power of influence, while Taiwan is not regarded as a country and internally, has long been in a state of collective identity recognition crisis.

This internal and external defect is due to the fact that Taiwan has experienced various regime changes in history, which lead to the country itself being in a vacant state of suspense. So far, it still couldn’t escape from the historical effects of colonization, hence we still don’t have an image to generate our collective identity. How to realize this image is a continuous journey in our search for a collective identification, one which has led us to search internationally for possibilities.

《Altitude 70,000 feet》
Screen、Motor、Gyroscope, 2020

This is a view filled with various types of political subtext. Among modern military aircraft created during the Cold War, the U-2 reconnaissance aircraft with a maximum altitude of 70,000 feet, was the highest altitude any aircraft could operate. For the first time, the pilot’s field of vision can gaze through the blue gradient transformation of the atmosphere.

This work follows from the piece Container, 2019. Using the screen as a modern viewing medium, superimposing the pilot’s first-person perspective, and atmospheric line that divides the sky and the ground. The work further discusses the subject of viewing politics of images, viewing medium, and overlaying viewpoints.
