FLOW—Glimpse and Flying Chien-Chung DINGXShi-Fu YU

Curatorial Statement
In this exhibition, Ding Chien-Chung creates a new piece of video art work, following his recent “Damp-Change Color Ink” project. In the way of real-time shooting, the scenes and memories of daily life are provoked, which display images of time-flowing. The fragments in the image flows and the unclear psychological states string together a road between life and art. By making this momentary process more specific, the artist chooses to expose a deviating kind of heterogeneous feelings from everyday life. This exhibition displays the image and installation of “the Elapse”—the wavering, flowing, and turning of FLOW—on the edge of spatial time, triggering the audience’s imagination to create possibilities.

Like flying, “FLOW” is a lasting continuous movement that corresponds with the exhibition theme. Yu Shi-Fu picked several pieces from “Flight Plan”, transforming the mechanical components of precipitating into an elegant and dynamic sculpture. Through light and mechanical parts, he tries to manifest the condition of flying and interprets the idea of “what is flying” from an artistic perspective.
Artists
Chien-Chung DING
born in Taipei in 1983, has taken courses of Computer Animation and Interaction Design in college, and has finished his graduate degree in the department of New Media Art in National Taipei University of the Arts. His early works concern the corresponding relationship among structure, rotation and space. Through the sounds and light from well-designed machinery, he explores the repetitive issues between mediums, the futile poetry in artworks, and the unfamiliarity in daily and standardization, offering the audience with a different perspective of living system. As a usual material in creating, “light” constructs the context and axis of the work, corresponding the relationship focusing on time and space. DING attempts to withdraw the machinery in his recent works, echoing the natural state of the involving space. Also, he extends the interpretation of light to the relationship between the viewer’s body and memory.

DING Chien-Chung was selected in FILE 2014 in São Paulo, Brazil ART · SANYA — HUAYU YOUTH AWARD in China, and MADE in TAIWAN — Young Artist Discovery in ART TAIPEI, and also was honored in TAIPEI ARTS AWARD in Taiwan, and his work was collected in Collection Project for Young Taiwanese Artists of National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in Taichung. Based on the concept of “Aesthetics of Movement”. Adding the warmth of emotions into cold hard steel to turn a mechanical piece into art with movement, which would become an expression of life experience, memory and emotions.
